How do you know if you have a chilblain?

Chilblains are relatively common in the colder climates and are a reaction of the small blood vessels to the change in temperature. The spasm of these small blood vessels and the resultant accumulation of waste products causes a range of painful symptoms. The symptoms range from an itchy to a painful area on the skin. It can start out with a reddish colour that progresses to a dark bluish-like colour. They can range in severity from a very slight reddish or crimson colour that is just itchy to the more severe problem that is very painful and the skin being broken down.
