A bunion (hallux valgus), is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe. It develops when the big toe pushes against the second toe, causing the joint to protrude outward. This misalignment can lead to discomfort, swelling, redness, and pain, particularly when wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes. Factors contributing to bunion formation include genetic predisposition, arthritis, and wearing high heels or narrow shoes that crowd the toes.
